The Power of Music in Masonry: Breathing New Life into the Lodge
Imagine stepping into a Masonic lodge where every ritual, every movement is elevated by a symphony of sounds. Now, imagine you have the power to create this ambiance. Here’s how I brought music into my Masonic journey and how you can too.
The Value of the Lodge Organist
Starting my Masonic journey in 2001, I felt something was amiss — the sound of music. The Lodge Organist, a position often vacant, sits in the northeast corner of the lodge room. This individual doesn’t just play the organ; in today’s age, a digital audio workstation, like the one I’ve used, suffices.
My Personal Musical Evolution in Masonry
In 2004, at North Hollywood Lodge, No. 542 F. & A.M., my journey began. Worshipful Ron Presser, appointed me as organist, allowing me to musically score out the degrees. Leveraging software like Propellerhead Software’s Reason, and combining my classical and jazz backgrounds, I crafted compositions that added depth to our rituals. Throughout the years, I’ve adapted my musical style to technological advancements and the preferences of different Worshipful Masters.
The Universal Language of Music
Music transcends barriers. It’s been identified as a tenet in the staircase lecture and as the universal language of the soul. Whether you’re employing the melodies of Beethoven or Mozart’s Freemason compositions, it enriches Masonic ceremonies, providing an unforgettable experience for both members and candidates.
How to Bring Music into Your Lodge
You don’t need to be a seasoned musician. With a bit of technological know-how, you can employ mobile digital audio workstations or stream music via smartphones. Alternatively, if you have musical brethren around, collaborate to create original compositions or re-record public domain pieces. My dream? Produce a compilation where proceeds go to Masonic charities.
The Call to Action
Music can revolutionize the way we experience our rituals. Yet, sadly, many lodges remain silent. If you’re inspired to change that, or if you need guidance, feel free to reach out. Wear the Lyre as the jewel of your office, not just as an ornament but as a symbol of your commitment to enhance the Masonic experience.
